Understanding customer behavior and sales performance is crucial for any business, especially in the competitive world of retail. In this portfolio project, I showcase how I utilized Microsoft Excel to analyze bike sales data, uncover insights, and provide actionable recommendations. The goal was simple: transform raw sales data into meaningful insights that drive smarter business decisions.

Project Overview

The dataset used contains over 1,000 records of bike sales, including fields such as customer demographics, product categories, order dates, purchase channels, and sales values. My primary objectives in this project were to:

• Clean and Prepare: The dataset for analysis
• Visualize: Key trends and relationships
• Uncover: Pattern in customer
• Build: an interactive sales dashboard

Step 1: Data Cleaning & Preparation

The first step was importing the raw data into Excel. I used Power Query to:

• Remove duplicates and blank rows
• Standarize date formats and column names
• Split full names into first name and last name for better personalization
• COnvertcategorical data such as gender, income level, and product type into consistent values

Step 2: Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA)

Using Pivot Tables, I explored key questions such as:

• Which bike models sold the most units?
• Do men or women purchase more bikes?
• Which regions generate the most revenue?
• How does customer income level affect purchase behavior?

I found that customers with higher incomes tended to purchase more expensive bikes. Additionally, online sales were more dominant in urban areas, while in-store purchases were higher in rural regions.

Step 3: Sales Trends & Visualizations

To make the insights more digestible, I created a set of Charts and visuals using Excel:

• Bar charts showing sales by region and gender
• Line graphs to track monthly revenue trends
• Pie charts representing sales distribution by product category
• Heat maps to highlight high-performing sales representatives

Each visualization helped identify what drives performance and where the opportunities lie

Step 4: Interactive Dashboard

The highlight of this project was building an interactive sales dashboard using Excel's built-in tools. The dashboard includes:

• Slicers for filtering by product category, region, and sales channel
• KPI cards showing total revenue, total units sold, and average order value
• Dynamic charts that update based on user selection

This dashboard is not just a reporting tool—it's a decision-making assistant.

Key Insight & Recommendation

From the analysis, I derived several business recommendations:

• Focus marketing on high-income segments to promote premium bikes
• Improve online customer experience in rural areas to boost digital sales
• Encourage underperforming regions through incentive-based sales programs

Conclusion

This bike sales analysis project demonstrates the power of Excel for turning raw data into business insights. With just spreadsheet tools and a strategic approach, I was able to extract trends, segment customers, and provide solutions—all within one file. Excel remains one of the most accessible yet powerful tools in a data analyst's toolkit.
